The University of Porto wins bronze at International Programming Competition and qualifies for world final 2019 in Porto

A team from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) won the bronze medal at the Southwestern Europe Regional Contest (SWERC) 2018 held in Paris and qualified for the world final, to be held in Porto in 2019.

The International Programming Competition regional phase gathered the best universities of Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland and Israel.

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) was established over 40 years ago and stands as the most prestigious and oldest Programming Contest in the world.

A total of 89 teams from 49 universities from the Southwest Europe participated in the SWERC and FCUP 1 of the Computer Science Department was the best Portuguese team.

The bronze medal, which granted twelfth place for the Portuguese team from Porto, confirms the excellence of the programme Studies in the University of Porto in the context of Portuguese universities' participation.

The city of Porto will host the final in 2019, a joint organisation by the University of Porto and Porto City Hall. This is the first time that the ACM-ICPC world finals will be held in Portugal.

The final is scheduled to take place from 31 March till 5 April, at The Customs Building of Porto. An estimated 1500 students from all over the globe will fight for the title of Programming World Champions.

This is the first time that a Portuguese team will play the final of such prestigious competition.
