The small auditorium of Rivoli screens German film shows on March 20, featuring "The Marriage of Maria Braun (German: Die Ehe der Maria Braun) directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder at 6.30 pm, and "The Captain" (German: Der Hauptmann) directed by Robert Schwentke, at 10 pm.

Fassbinder's film, from 1979, stars Hanna Schygulla as Maria, whose marriage to the soldier Hermann remains unfulfilled due to World War II and his apparent death in battle. Maria tries to adapt to post-war Germany and becomes the wealthy mistress of an industrialist, all the while staying true to her love for Hermann.

Hanna Schygulla won a Silver Bear award at the Berlim Film Festival.

The film is the first of Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy, followed by Lola and Veronika Voss.

It screens at 6.30 pm.

The second session is scheduled to start at 10 pm, with the screening of the film "The Captain" (German: Der Hauptmann), a 2017 German drama film, based on real events, directed by Robert Schwentke, who returns to Germany to direct a film, after more than a decade working in Los Angeles.

It was screened in the Special Presentations section at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.

"The Captain" tells the story of German war criminal and defector himself, Willi Herold, who takes on a stolen identity as a German officer and orchestrates the killing of deserters and other prisoners at one of the Emslandlager camps.
