The new Official Animal Assembly Centre is set and running in Campanhã, next door to the Municipal Greenhouse, as of early this week, the last animals were relocated in this facility.

The deputy Mayor of Porto City Hall, Filipe Araújo, in charge of the Innovation and Environment Department, visited the new facilities that now accommodate the municipal team of caretakers and veterinaries. It is not open to the public yet, as it follows the guidelines for minimum services, which involve permanent cleaning and feeding of the boxes, as well as the response to emergency situations and the collection of stray, wounded or dead animals.

These modern facilities enable municipal services to guarantee the best conditions to house animals, especially in a context of social isolation and also minimizes contagion risks of municipal workers, which is the reason that the allocation to these new facilities were not interrupted.

This represents double capacity regarding animal housing, from 94 boxes to 220, with a physical and functional separation between the adoption service and the official assembly service, which will enable to improve the services provided and boost the responsible adoption of the animals at the centre.

It is worth mentioning that the Municipality of Porto concluded the "Control Plan and Well Being of animal population - cats and dogs - in 2015" that embodies a medium and long term strategy to ensure the health monitoring of these animals populations and to reduce the euthanasia rate of viable animals in the centre, via a responsible adoption.

This plan was debated with the following stakeholders: Association of veterinary doctors, General Directorate of Food and Zoophile associations.

All measures have been implemented and have anticipated a legal diploma towards the compulsory requirement to put in place a new animal assembly centre that replaces the 80 year old existing facility.

The conclusion of such facility and the setting up of this animal assembly shelter - CROA - Centro de Recolha Oficial de Animais, at the parish of Campanhã, at Travessa de Águas Férreas de Campanhã (side by side with the Municipal Nursery) represents the compliance with the electoral commitment of the independent majority that rules Porto City Hall as of October 2013.
