The Christmas Concert of Coliseu Porto has been set for 18 December, at 9.30 pm. The single presentation features The Messiah by Handel.

With Argentinian maestro Leonardo García Alarcón conducting, this will be a time for a unique rendition of the iconic "Hallelujah", sung by the Lisboa Cantat Choir and conducted by Jorge Carvalho Alves.

The concert presents soloists Joana Seara (soprano), Carolina Figueiredo (mezzo-soprano), Marco Alves dos Santos (tenor) and André Henriques (baritone).

Written by Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) the piece premiered at Easter in 1742, and The Messiah is the most famous of the musical oratorios. Although considered sacred Music, it is not meant to make a religious ritual; instead, it seems very much like opera as a concert.

"It has no scenery or wardrobe, but it is full of theatricality, rather than the foreseeable drama narrative around the life, death and resurrection of Christ, it amazes with a profound meditation on its icon", Coliseu Porto highlights.

This is the second moment of the three orchestra concert cycle, a joint artistic partnership between Coliseu Porto and Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra.
