Porto is about to transform how cycling is done in the city, by implementing a pilot programme connecting cycling with public transport.

The overall project is about sustainable city transport, building enough connected and safe bike lanes.

Porto was the first municipality in Portugal to link public transport and motorcycles and now the demand is for a bike network, due to the good performance of the motorcycle network programme, which was assessed by the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto.

In a city where the car still dominates, it is time to move forward regarding the struggle for sustainable transports and mobility in the city.

The city Hall will test the same pilot programme, this time for bikes, in the busiest street of the city, Rua de Costa Cabral.

The aim is to tackle traffic accidents by developing a human-friendly environment mobility network, as well as lowering pollution levels.

The motion will be considered at the next Council meeting.
