"Turandot", by Giacomo Puccini, is featured in Coliseu Porto bringing back opera to the city of Porto Saturday, 21 October, starting at 8 pm.

"There is opera in the Coliseu!" became the bywords of the city of Porto under the agreement signed between Coliseu Porto and the São Carlos National Theatre.

This joint partnership will enable Coliseu Porto to stage incredible world-class opera shows.

What best way to start the materialisation of one of the purposes Coliseu Porto has established at the time of its refoundation, with one of the world's greatest operas.

Now it is possible to enjoy the passion that has made opera one of the most spectacular musical experiences.

This performance is an opera as a concert, with the most prestigious Portuguese classical singer Elisabete Matos as Turandot (the singer made her debut in this concert hall), conducted by maestro Domenico Longo.

Turandot is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, completed by Franco Alfano, and set to a libretto in Italian by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni.

The opera's version of the story takes place in China where icy Princess Turandot lives. Prince Calaf immediately falls in love with Turandot and he is resolved to obtain permission to marry her. A suitor has to solve three conundrums; any wrong answer results in death by decapitation. Calaf passes the test, but Turandot is still reluctant to marry him; Calaf suggests that if she is able to learn his name before dawn he is willing to give her up and die.
