The President of the Republic's commitment to stop the flouting of homelessness

The President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, made a recognition visit in Porto in the context of the social responses to homelessness in the city.

According to the President, the social inclusion and integration of homeless people in the country is a target to be met till 2023/2024.

"The expectation is that the large majority of homeless people has health, housing and employability conditions to stop being roofless".

The Head of State dined at the Porto Association for the Homeless. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived at the Association at 8 pm, waited in line to be served and joined the other people in the institution to enjoy his meal, according to the News Agency Lusa.

The President then accompanied Service Providers and the Municipal Department of Social Action of Porto City Hall to some city streets, where homeless people spend the night.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa further stated that the work on tackling homelessness is still in the beginning and that it has to be extended to other cities in the country.

The National Strategy for the Integration of Homeless people (ENIPSSA) 2017-2023, budgeted at EUR 60 million, comprises 15 goals, 76 actions and 103 activities, including residential care, public health actions, development of employment strategies for job creation and training.
