Gateway to Porto for those who arrive by train to the city’s Historic center, the main lobby of the S. Bento train station is as good as new. A true tourist attraction, its monumental tile panels are again fully visible, now that the repair of the ceiling and roof of the railway station is over.

“During the contract work the inside of the vestibule was painted, recovering its original color, determined by the result of the surveys carried out, which showed the pre-existence of two tones, a brown and a yellow one”, Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), the entity responsible for the intervention, explains in a statement.

The final color of the atrium “also resulted from its combination with the tile frieze that joins the ceiling to the walls”, notes IP, adding that “the maintenance and preservation work was also carried out on the clock” placed on one of the walls.

The work was monitored by Direção Regional de Cultura do Norte, as the building has been classified as being of public interest since 1997.
