Last year was, most definitely, a very positive year for the seaport of Leixões, establishing new freight handling records, with 19.5 million tons of cargo handled, in other words, 0.8 p.p. up regarding the year 2016.

According to the Management of Douro and Leixões Ports (APDL), more than 1.2 million tons were handled in 2017, compared to the previous record of 725 thousand tons in 2016.

Also in 2017, the movement of disembarked liquid bulk and of "roll on/roll off" cargo, hit record highs, which was up 18%. The 'ro-ro' operations surpassed, for the first time, the one million tons mark, as stated by APDL.

Last year, the Port of Leixões registered a monthly average of over one million tons of freight handled (1.626.366 tons), the more significant months being May and October.

The main export commodities in 2017 were container cargo, a range of refinery products, iron/steel and granite, and the leading imported cargo were crude oil, wood chips and iron scrap.

It is worth emphasising that in 2017, the seaport of Leixões hit a record high in stopovers, with a total number of 100 stopovers and nearly 96 thousand passengers in both terminals.
