Porto was the first city to formulate policy pertaining tourist transport, including touristic buses, tuk-tuks and other tourist related transport.

Tourist transport is now banned from Bus lanes and housing districts. Also, the tourist transport sector has to meet stricter environmental standards.

Transport is a key element of the tourism sector as it connects tourists, both domestic and international, to destinations, and facilitates the internal movement of visitors between attractions, lodging, and services. Thus, factors such as site, capacity, efficiency and connectivity of transport play a substantial part in how a destination develops and on tourist experiences within destinations.

However, the increasing number of travellers generates various challenges regarding transport organization and capacity.

Porto has understood the indissoluble connection between transport and tourism and has developed a policy that regulates tourist transport.
