Porto helps rethink urban noise management in Brussels

Councillor responsible for the Environment of the Porto City Hall, Filipe Araújo, attended the conference "Noise in Europe" and called for a paradigm shift and rules capable of reversing the high noise levels caused by the heavy traffic on the roads.

This conference preceded the World Noise Awareness Day, which is celebrated today, April 26.

WHO has released alarming information on the topic of noise.  One in four of the Union's citizens is exposed to harmful levels of noise. Almost 120 million people report irritation and malaise due to noise pollution and at least 8 million suffer from sleep disorders.

During the conference, councillor Filipe Araújo from Porto City Hall draw the attentions to the perspective of the Cities, featuring a critical assessment of the last 15 years of Best practices in the city of Porto regarding urban noise management.

It is worth noting that Porto is a member of Eurocities since 1990. Founded in 1986, this network of cities promotes the exchange of best practices and represents the interests of major cities in the framework of Community institutions, striving to include urban demands in European policies.
