The 14th edition of the "Essência do Vinho", Portugal's premier annual wine show opened Thursday, 23rd February, at Palácio da Bolsa, in the city of Porto. Discover the wonderful world of wine in Porto and have a go at evaluating wine like a pro until Sunday, 26th February.
This event, which was founded in 2004, brings together more than 3,000 wines from 350 producers, both domestic and foreign. The parallel programme offers thematic wine tastings and pairing, conducted by those who really know their business.
The Wine tasting is organized by the EV-Essência do Vinho, jointly with Porto Commercial Association and the support of Porto City Hall.
On the first day of the event, a reputable international panel of tasters, including Alejandro Paadín, Alexandre Lalas and Christine Krieger, evaluated, in a blind tasting, 10 pre-selected wines.
Portugal has a unique climate to grow and produce unparalleled wines that are bursting with flavour and complexity.
According to Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto, "this event goes well beyond the city of Porto. It is an event of national dimension because all the wine regions and all exporters are represented here; everything that has to do with the resurgence of our wine, with a growing eligibility, now internationally renowned, with extraordinary ratings in trade journals and today we can find it (wine) in New York, S. Paulo."
"From here we connect everything: the image of the city, the image of its producers, the way Porto wants to be cosmopolitan that is exactly through what it has (...), exporting what we have", affirms the Mayor of Porto.
"Porto is a city that embraces both national and regional interests", concludes Rui Moreira.
New element for this year's edition is "Portugal Wine Connection" initiative, which aims to bring together more than 70 wine importers, producers and winemakers as well as foreign journalists and economic operators, opinion leaders and importers that operate in 14 foreign markets.
Director of "Essência do Vinho", Nuno Pires, stated that more than 20 thousand visitors are expected to show up at this Wine experience at Palácio da Bolsa in Porto.
