The city of Porto will host the book fair from 7 to 23 September at the Gardens of Palácio de Cristal and besides the 134 publishing companies represented, there will be the "Cabine de Escalas" project, aimed at hosting small and large scale independent publishing houses, free of charge.

This type of cultural event not only promotes reading habits but also represents an essential opportunity for publishers to engage directly with readers.

Book fairs are changing their format and landscape, namely the editorial works mobility and the capacity to establish new relations with readers.

The 2018 edition honours José Mário Branco. A man whose professional path has many dimensions. He is a singer, a composer, a lyricist, a producer and an actor.

"The project is a shared space, which makes it possible for small scale publishers and bookdealers to participate free of charge in Porto Book Fair", stated Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto.

The programming, officially presented last Tuesday, on 28th August, includes debates on "necessary revolutions", featuring Daniel Cohn-Bendit, one of the leading figures of May 68, and Leila Slimani, awarded the Goncourt Prize in 2016 with "Chanson Douce", spoken word sessions revolving around topics such as utopia and melancholia, exhibitions and film sessions.

"We believe this is the right dimension for this space; an upgrade would misrepresent the visitor's relationship with the park and the landscape as well, which is a distinguishing feature of this event and of this project in Porto", concluded Rui Moreira.
