Porto Ambiente and Sociedade de Transportes Coletivos do Porto (STCP) fleets are moving in an increasingly naturally renewable way. Using biomethane, a 100% renewable form of natural gas, produced from organic waste, that will supply 36 STCP buses and the municipal environment company’s collection vehicles.

The Vice president of Porto City Hall adds that “our expectation is to be able to increase the integration of biomethane in the coming years”.

“This is another decisive step in the path we have been taking to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality in the city by 2030, in line with the commitment we assumed when launching, in 2022, the Porto Climate Pact”, underscores Filipe Araújo, who is also the councillor for the Environment and Climate Transition.

In the STCP fleet, this commitment represents an integration of 11,5% of this component in the supply of 333 buses powered by natural gas. These 36 vehicles are added to the twenty 100% electric buses, which are already circulating. Overall, the intermunicipal company has 12% of its fleet completely free of any emission.

The president of the STCP’s board of directors, Cristina Pimentel, considers this a “reinforcement of the commitment assumed towards the decarbonization of the operation, as well as the will to actively contribute to the quality of life of the populations of the municipalities where we operate”.

STCP highlights that, when produced from organic waste, biomethane contributes for “the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuels, aligning with global and national environmental goals”.

Currently, the intermunicipal bus fleet is composed of 434 vehicles, 77% powered by natural gas (of which, 11,5% of them on biomethane), 5% of them are 100% electric vehicles, and 18% on diesel.
