The Municipality of Porto was distinguished for the pioneering strategy that has led to increased efficiency and better cost-effectiveness in the transport of people and goods. The award was presented during the City Forum & Urban C-ITS Contest, which took place last week at the Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett.

The councillor for Urbanism and Public Space, Pedro Baganha, participated in the opening ceremony of the awards. Promoted by the C-Roads project, the European initiative, which aims at the harmonized implementation of cooperative intelligent transport systems, highlights the services, systems and architectures implemented in cities.

Since 2021, the Porto City Council has started installing road and pedestrian traffic analysis equipment in strategic locations. Among the objectives are obtaining data for real-time measurement of the city's road demand, but also supporting traffic studies and monitoring traffic conditions in these areas.

Likewise, real-time data monitoring allows citizens to be informed, through variable message boards, of possible restrictions on road traffic, producing an immediate impact on reducing traffic constraints in the city.

More recently, and within the scope of the MMTIS (Multimodal Intelligent Transport Systems) pilot, the Municipality of Porto, supported by Porto Digital, published 20 multimodal sheets on NAP Portugal (National Access Point to road and multimodal information), referring to the location of municipal car parks, loading and unloading places, sharing points for soft modes, among others.

The actions are part of the European project Cooperative-Streets (C-Streets), which aims to introduce a technological road revolution in cities.

During the forum in Porto, the cities that are part of the project had the opportunity to discuss the progress and future of C-ITS policies, as well as their impacts on the urban scenario.
