Porto City Hall opened, once again, school canteens, during Christmas break, guaranteeing the supply of 23.231 meals (10.768 lunches and 12.463 snacks) to children attending the 1st cycle of Primary School, kindergartens, 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary school students (lunch).

This action enabled access to a nutritionally balanced meal, available in person (consumption at school), or on takeaway (possibility of taking the meal home), to the children and students who need this service, during the Christmas break, at the prices applied during the current academic year. Meals are free for level A students.

Escola Solidária is an initiative aimed at the entire school population, from the ages of three to 18 years old, in public schools in the city, extending to siblings of the 1st cycle of Primary School students, with ages between three and 10 years old, even if they do not attend a public school in Porto.

Fernando Paulo, councillor for Education, stands out the importance of the school meal service, without interruptions from January the 1st to December 31st, including during school breaks and holiday periods, that “provides a nutritionally balanced and safe quality service, creating, also, a privileged space for food education, health education, for the promotion of healthy lifestyles and promotion of equality and social inclusion of the young people.”

This diverse and differentiated school initiative aims to meet the real needs of the school community and families, guaranteeing the access to nutritionally balanced meals like lunch and snacks during school breaks.
