Cineclube do Porto celebrates 75 years with a special programming

Cineclube do Porto, the oldest film society in Portugal celebrates its 75th anniversary. These film clubs enable people to watch films that are not screened in mainstream cinemas. The Cineclube do Porto was established on 13th April 1945, at the height of the Salazar dictatorship, at the Alexandre Herculano High School, in Porto. The original name of the film society was "Clube Português de Cinematografia", but the name that endured thus far is "Cineclube do Porto" and after 75 years, it is the oldest cineclub running in the country. 

The date is celebrated with a cycle that tells the history of cinema throughout these past 75 years, from print film to digital era.

The Covid-19 pandemic led to stopping all the celebratory activities scheduled to take place last April; as such, this October the activities resume and will take place at Casa das Artes.

It is true to say that the history of Cinema is also the history of the Cineclube do Porto itself, so starting on 15th October, there is a special programming devoted to celebrating these 75 years, under the "7½" motto, the cycle features one film per decade, since the inception of the Cineclub, in 1945.

The kick off film is Vampyr (1932) by Dreyer, to be screened on 15th October. The following film selection includes movies by Orson Welles, Bresson, Godard, Coppola and films such as "Sans Soleil", "Russian Ark" and "Under the Skin".

This cinematic journey also features special guest appearances to help discuss and debate not only the importance of cinema history but also the impact these films had when they premiered.

Sessions are scheduled for the first Saturdays of each month, always at 6pm, in regular sessions at Casa das Artes. See HERE the October programme.

The activities programme will close with the presentation of the book"75 anos: Cineclube do Porto", a commemorative edition that includes articles by eminent persons and researchers from the field of cinema, to debate the inception of this film society in Porto, the artistic milieu in Porto regarding its connection with the Cineclube do Porto and its acquis.
