20th PortoCartoon Festival announces prizewinning cartoon

The National Press Museum announced the prizewinning cartoon of the 20th edition of PortoCartoon.
This year's edition featured themes such as the Environment, Fado singer Amália Rodrigues and filmmaker and musician Woody Allen. 

"Clean the Planet" is the main theme of this edition and the winning work is from Croatia, by Nikola Listes, depicting the pollution of oceans with fishermen machine washing fish to serve at the table.

"The Main Prize is directly related to the most relevant subjects nowadays", stated to Lusa News Agency Francisco Ferreira, President of the Environmentalist Association ZERO, and also member of the jury, alongside Bernard Bouton (FECO President), Roberto Merino (Chilean theatre director established in Porto) and Xaquín Marín (founder of the Museo de Humor de Fene, Spain).

The twenty years of PortoCartoon saw an increased participation, with Iran showcasing around 500 works, Turkey presented 200 works, Brazil featured 180, Romania showcased 114 and Portugal presented 96 works.

Albanian artist Agim Sulaj was awarded second place in the major competition and the third place was granted ex aequo to Mahboobeh Pakdel, from Iran and Cau Gomez, from Brazil.

The Prize for Special Caricature Amália Rodrigues was awarded to Portuguese artist António Santos, aka "Santiagu", and Spanish Matias Tolsá and also to Portuguese Aurélio Mesquita.

Portuguese artists Pedro Silva and Pedro Ribeiro Ferreira and Brazilian Paulo Caruso were awarded the Prize for Special Caricature Woody Allen.

The winner of the Public Prize of the PortoCartoon 2017 was Brazilian surgeon Ronaldo Cunha Dias. This is the third time that this artist wins this prize, and this year he won with the work depicted in the image above, which was also granted a Special Mention by the International panel of jurors of PortoCartoon.
