The University of Porto (UP) performed best in 23 subject areas, according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019, with UP ranking among the world Top 100 best in Architecture, Sports, Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering, consolidating UP's position at international level regarding Higher Education.

The areas of knowledge where the University of Porto ranks best are Engineering and Technology, followed by Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Management.

It is worth highlighting that there was an upgrade of Mechanical Engineering, Physics and Education regarding the same ranking last year and new entries in the top 2019, namely Finance, Management and Sociology.

The University of Porto ranks 101 (out of 150) in Agriculture, Education, Mechanical Engineering; it ranks 151 out of 200 in Art and Design, Environmental Sciences, Electrotechnical Engineering, Pharmacy and Pharmacology;
It also ranks 201 out of the 250 best Universities in the areas of Materials Sciences, Modern Languages, Medicine and Chemistry. UP is also 251 best out of the Top 300 in Biology, Computer Science, Economy, Finances and Sociology. 

It is worth mentioning that the University of Porto is included in the group of the 350 Best Universities in the Management and mathematics Ranking and makes it to the "Top 400" in Physics and Astronomy.

Quacquarelli Symonds- QS, has been producing authoritative, independent and global rankings since 2004 and continues to be the leader on higher education institutions ranking and evaluation all around the globe.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject distinguishes the world's top universities in several domains, covering 46 subjects. It also includes five rankings for broad subject areas: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences & Management.

The rankings are based on four key pillars: research, teaching, employability, and internationalization. Also, methodology is built on the following indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty and international students, as well as bibliometric index from the Scopus/Elsevier database.

The top 5 includes Harvard University (USA), MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Oxford University (UK), Cambridge University (UK) and Stanford University (USA).

Last June, The University of Porto was considered The Best Portuguese University ranked in the QS World University Rankings, holding the 328 position in universities at world level.
