The Hebrew incunabulum in the Synagogue in Porto is the topic of "An Object and its Discourses per Week"

The initiative "An Object and its Discourses per Week" that will take place 18 November will refer to a religious Hebrew document and will be held under special conditions in the Synagogue in Porto.

The event is entrance free upon ticket presentation.

The said object is the Perush Ha-Berakhot Ve-Ha-Tefillot, by David Ben Joseph Abudarham and the event will start, exceptionally, at 6.30 pm, after the Shabbat prayers, which end when three stars are visible in the firmament, after the sunset.

For safety reasons, maximum capacity of 70 people, who have to be identified.

This Hebrew incunabulum, dated from 1489, was produced in Lisbon in the Rabi Elieser Toledano atelier, contains text printed in Hebrew characters.

This is a religious book, accredited to David ben Joseph Abudarham, from Seville (14th century) whose pages contain a commentary to the prayers of the whole Liturgical Year. It shows the importance of the Jewish connection with the Portuguese history in the late fifteenth century.

The session will be attended by Elvira Mêa, a retired Professor of the Faculty of Arts, University of Porto. The Professor has developed historical research on Judaism, New-Christians, and the Inquisition.

Paulo Heitlinger is also a guest speaker. He holds a PhD in Nuclear Physics from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany.

The moderator is the Portuguese British mathematician Michael Rothwell, born in Manchester and resident in Porto for the past 35 years. He is a graduate of Cambridge University and holds a PhD from Manchester.
