The city of Porto will be richly illuminated for the Merry Season, as over two million micro led bulbs will be used for decoration in celebration of Christmas.

Displays of Christmas lights (also known as fairy lights) in public venues and on public buildings are a popular part of the annual celebration of Christmas, and this year is no exception with 59 streets, squares, gardens and city buildings decorated with the charm of Christmas ambiance, from 1 December till 6 January 2019.

Around 95 per cent of the mini lights used are energy-saving light bulbs, delivering energy savings up to 80 percent, compared with traditional lighting.

Porto will glow at night in the most visited streets in town and also where traditional trade awaits for this festive season.

The lighting of the city streets takes place concurrently with the lighting of the Christmas tree, on 1 December at 6 pm, which will take place in front of the City Hall, as tradition.

This will be one of the largest trees in the country, 40 metres long and 20 metres wide, with over 29 thousand icicle bulbs and weighing 12 tons.

The Tree will be lit everyday at 5.30 pm and every Saturday and Sunday afternoon, there will be child tales and children shows inside the tree.
