The refurbished Parque de São Roque opens this Thursday, September 1st and has gained 1.2 hectares of extension. Following the municipal strategy for the increase of green areas in the city, the Porto City Hall invested more than 1.4 million euros in the extension and enhancement works of the green space located in the eastern part of the city.

The pathways have been resurfaced, the resting areas have been improved and the iconic labyrinth has been preserved. There are an additional 1.2 hectares entering a woodland area that was previously inaccessible to visitors and which is now part of the accessible area of the park.

This space also has new viewpoints with privileged views over the Douro River, a new feature resulting from the extension made. The intervention also included the progressive replacement of eucalyptus trees by indigenous species and the rehabilitation of all the internal pathways.

The enhancement works, carried out by the municipal company GO Porto, included the replacement of pavements; the improvement of lighting with new equipment and placement of LED lamps; the replacement and relocation of street furniture; and the requalification of the main networks (water supply, wastewater and rainwater drainage, and electrical power distribution).

The expansion works in the park were guaranteed by the Environment Department of Porto Municipality. Overall, the interventions resulted in a municipal investment of over 1.4 million euros.

The enhancement and extension of Parque de São Roque are part of the municipal strategy for the increase of green areas in the city, with counts with an overall investment of over 10 million euros. The Plano Diretor Municipal also establishes as a primary goal the enrichment of the ecological structure and the densification of green areas, in order to fight climate change.
