Last Thursday, the Terminal Intermodal de Campanhã (TIC) celebrates its first year of activity with more than five million passengers (from July 2022 until July 2023), distributed between 630 schedules, 11 operators, and 58 final destinations.

Inaugurated on July 20th of 2022, the Terminal has transformed into an important hub of transport connections, with a big impact in the city and in the region. It is the first terminal in the country to connect every mode of transportation simply and effectively, rapidly becoming the centre of departures and arrivals in Porto and the North Region.

“With the Terminal, we took 100 thousand buses away from the city centre with an enormous impact on the environment and mobility. Many people state they enjoy the space, that it is very comfortable and that it is located well”, said the mayor of Porto City Hall, that, accompanied by some councillors and the president of Sociedade de Transportes Coletivos do Porto (STCP), Cristina Pimentel, visited the infrastructure, installed in Campanhã.

“We have what a contemporary city needs when it comes to intermodality. This is a challenge to the cities that keeps increasing”, Rui Moreira stressed, highlighting the municipal investment of 13 million euros in the project.

Going back in time, the politician from Porto recalled that TIC had been promised since the turn of the century. Meanwhile, “we made a public tender, and a great architect (Nuno Brandão Costa) was chosen. It is always satisfying to understand that, at the end of one year, things are working”, Rui Moreira added.

“TIC keeps maturing”

However, the construction works for TIC are not finished. Apart from the tunnel connecting to Campanhã Station – the municipality has already started its construction, even though it is Infraestuturas de Portugal’s responsibility” – a public tender has now been launched to install the escalators, in a budget superior to one million euros.

“TIC keeps maturing. Many people that came from Lisbon to Porto, use this terminal more and more”, Rui Moreira stated, refusing the idea of door-to-door transports.

TIC is the first terminal in the country to connect every mode of transportation, simply and effectively, rapidly becoming, the centre of departures and arrivals from Porto and the North Region. All those who arrive to the city through TIC, can rapidly connect to any place in the city, using the subway, the train, or the urban bus.

The “airport for buses”

Aiming to be environmentally sustainable, TIC is localised under the biggest green area (1.600 trees) ever implanted in a public building in the city, which aids the absorption of all air and visual pollution in the terminal.

Considering sustainability, it was built according to the LEED Certificate (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and it is a candidate to receive this certificate which, when it happens, will transform it into the first road transport terminal in Europe to achieve it.

Apart from that, TIC works as an airport, as there is no predefined pier for the different operators. Every time a bus arrives, the management system reads its license plate and assigns a pier for it. From there, every passenger can see in real time the pier that has been assigned to their trip. Every pier has sensors that allow to monitor the available piers and optimise their usage.

To celebrate its first anniversary, this Thursday the initiative BUSking Sessions – Músicos da Cidade, in partnership with STCP Serviços with M.Ou.Co. Overall, there will be 21 music projects in the terminal. Apart from today, the programme will continue every Saturday afternoon, until September 2nd.
