The Serralves Museum features the exhibition "The Sonnabend Collection: Half a Century of European and American Art. Part II", from 11 May to 23 September 2018.

Created by the influential art dealer Ileana Sonnabend, the Sonnabend Collection is considered one of the most important collections of American and European art of the second half of the twentieth century, representing some of the most influential western art movements of our time.

The exhibition deals with two different themes from this important collection, namely the use of photography, from Conceptual Art of the 1960's to present time, and the work of artists from the 1980's related to Pop Art and minimalism.

The Museum presents artwork by Gilbert & George, Bernd and Hilla Becher, John Baldessari, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Candida Hofer, Haim Steinbach and Ashley Bickerton. Also, sculptures by Jeff Koons, from the period between 1985 and 2012, will be the motto for a retrospective presentation by the North American artist.

The exhibit " The Sonnabend Collection: Half a Century of European and American Art. Part II" is curated by António Homem, in partnership with the Fondazione Musei Civici Venezia (MUVE), Ca' Pesaro, in Venice, and the Sonnabend Collection Foundation.

Works from the Sonnabend Collection formed part of Serralves Museum's inaugural exhibition, ?Circa 1968' in 1999, and several of which have remained on long-term deposit at the museum.
