Safety is the cornerstone of Porto, "it is embedded in the governance of the city", wherefore it has a "significant impact" on the municipal budget for next year.

This information was shared by Mayor Rui Moreira, early this morning, at the time of the presentation of 60 new agents of the Porto Municipal Police (PM) at the Town Hall.

The Mayor recalled that just a year ago, the Municipal Police only employed 70 agents. In 2018 there will be 220, "which appears to be a reasonable number".

Also in 2018, the stock of cars will be doubled. In addition, "the municipality has upgraded uniforms and equipment so that the agents can fully carry out their duties".

The commander of Porto Municipal Police, António Leitão da Silva, emphasized that the priority given to the safety in the city "qualifies as an investment, not expenditure, as the Mayor and myself see it, and a safe city is an attractive city".

Rui Moreira further stated that "often times the country is oblivious of the significance of the security forces. We, Porto, are not".
