Races and guided tours mark the 500th anniversary of Fernão de Magalhães’ voyage

During the month of July, Clube de Vela Atlântico promotes the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation voyage around the planet, led by Fernão de Magalhães, with a number of initiatives, bringing together the three municipalities of the Atlantic Front: Porto, Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia (where the Portuguese navigator is supposed to have been born).

The Portuguese ORC Championship was held last weekend, from 7 to the 10th of July, together with the Federação Portuguesa de Vela, with the presence of more than a hundred sailors.

The program also includes the presence of the Vera Cruz Caravel, a replica of what is considered the most important Portuguese ship of the 15th Century, at the Porto Atlântico de Leixões, which included guided tours for young students and the general population, which are free and available until the 14th of July.

The Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, accompanied by the councilor for Youth and Sports, Catarina Araújo, participated in several initiatives, together with the Mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, and the councilor for Sports of the Municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, José Guilherme Aguiar, among other guests.

Until the end of the month, from the 22nd to the 24th of July, there will, also take place a stage of the Oceanic Race Discovery Race, as the Festival Náutico Regata à Madalena with Subida do Douro, a joint organization of the Atlantic Front clubs with Confraria Europeia da Vela (check program).

Closing the month, from 27th to the 31st of July, the Campeonato Mundial de Snipe Junior will take place, with around 40 boats (in a total of 80 of crew members) from seven countries.
