João Gama, a full professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto and researcher at INESC TEC, was recently named fellow of IEEE – Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a professional association for electronic engineering and electrical engineering, with its corporate office in New York City. João Gama was named for “his contributions regarding knowledge extraction techniques from continuous data flows”.

By being named IEEE Fellow, João Gama is acknowledged a distinction reserved for select IEEE members, as the total number selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting IEEE membership. Fellowship is awarded to a member in recognition of his/her relevant accomplishments in an IEEE field of interest.

“As I see it, the main scientific contribution is an architecture towards the development of adaptive learning algorithms from data flows”, explains João Gama, “which makes it possible to make real time decisions”.

João Gama is guest speaker to many conferences worldwide, namely in the USA, in China, in Holland or Brazil; now, the professor of the University of Porto joins other IEEE fellows such as Herbert Kroemer and Isamu Akasaki, Nobel laureates for Physics in 2000 and in 2014, respectively.

At INESC TEC, João Gama works alongside Vladimiro Miranda, João Peças Lopes and José Carlos Príncipe. “To see our effort and work acknowledged, that is always a nice feeling”, declares João Gama to the UP news portal. “I want to thank my collaborators and my students, without whom, I wouldn’t be able to attain this global recognition”.

It is worth mentioning that already in 2020, João Gama was acknowledged among the best scientists in computer science, launched by the Guide2Research portal, as well as a similar distinction by the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI).
