The "gig" economy and the reshaping of the world of work is the lead topic of the OECD 14th LEED Forum - Local Development Practitioners, Entrepreneurs, and Social Innovators, which took place on 18 and 19 September in Porto.

Societies are globally changing, driven by digitalisation, automation and the development of the so called "gig" economy. New careers will emerge in this digital era work and new work trends will redefine the job market.

Still, upending core assumptions about jobs and employees provides a new framework for thinking about workplaces, and local economic development opportunities and inclusive growth.

Over 300 participants from the local, national and international level, including mayors, employers, social innovators, entrepreneurs, as well as national government leaders attended the Forum to debate the impact of digitalisation and the on-demand economy on labour.

A "foresight exercise" was carried out in order to prepare actions for the new world of work.

Lamia Kamal-Chaoui, OECD Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions and Cities Director attended the Forum and was welcomed by the Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira at the City Hall. The Mayors of Braga and Viana do Castelo also attended the event, as well as the President of the North Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N).

During the session at the City Hall, Rui Moreira highlighted the rapid adjustment of the city's economic model and recalled that, as of 2015, Porto has been able to attract a number of investments related to different areas, which stood at 250 million euros, and generated 3 000 direct jobs, which are expected to reach 11 000 within two years.

Mayor Rui Moreira also noted that the development of talent and the engagement of people, together with the application of job and economy related policies, with an epicentre in InvestPorto, are key to position Porto as a central platform for the 21st century.
