Porto University Choral Society performs its 78th Annual Soirée on 3 July, at 6 pm, at the Círculo Católico de Operários do Porto. All artistic groups that are part of the Orfeão (Choral Society) will take to the stage to present their cultural and ethnographic work variation to the Academia and to the city.

The performance includes the Coro Clássico (exclusively playing Portuguese music), the Danças e Cantares Etnográficos, the Cantares de Maçadeiras (the rhythm is emulated from the maces and sickles that women from the countryside use to work the land), the Cante Alentejano (a display of deep voices that convey strong feelings), the Pauliteiros e Pauliteiras de Miranda (who will perform one of the least known Portuguese dances, the Dança dos Palos, an original from Miranda do Douro), the Jograis, the Fado de Lisboa, the Fado Académico (which first appeared in the beginning of the twentieth century), the Tuna Feminina and the Tuna Universitária do Porto (which was established in the nineteenth century). All this will be part of the Annual Soirée.

The Orfeão Universitário do Porto was founded in March 1912, when a group of students felt the need to extend the extracurricular activities within the University of Porto; as such, this was the first group to bring together students from all faculties.

Tickets for the 78th Annual Soirée can be purchased at Rua dos Bragas, where the Orfeão is based, or by reservation, via the email orfeao@orfeao.up.pt.
