The view from the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal to the Arrábida Bridge has gained more colour with the latest requalification of the so-called Jardim do "Buxo"

The intervention, carried out during two weeks by Palácio de Cristal’s team of gardeners, intended to maintain the landscape design of the garden commonly known as Jardim do “Buxo”. The designation emerged due to a strong attack by Cydalima perspectalis, also known as “Box-tree moth”.

Those who visit may now find plant species such as 1.600 Common Myrtle (Myrtus communis), four Ligustrum jonandrum shrubs, 1.200 globe amaranth plants (Gomphrena sp.), 4.500 Iresine herbstii, or “Herbst’s bloodleaf” as well as 6.000 lilyturf plants (Ophiopogon jaburan).

In addition to the recuperation of the vegetation layer, there was also an intervention at pavement level.

Over the last few years, the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal have seen several different improvements. Firstly, around 1.3 million euros have been invested in the restoration of viewpoints and paths that were previously deactivated.

In 2019, that location’s “visiting card” was requalified, a garden named after Émile David, the landscape architect who designed most of this vast green space in the city centre, in the second half of the 19th century.

In September of the same year, the surrounding area of Palácio de Cristal was also restored with the paving and redesign of Rua de D. Manuel II, rearranging the green areas and street furniture, which included the two ticket booths at the entrance of the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, that have been restored.
