This year, the Christmas season will resume its colour and magic on Avenida dos Aliados, where a magnificent Christmas tree, as befitting the city, will again be assembled: it will be around 34 meters high and 15,5 meters wide – and the assembly is already taking place.

After a year apart, given the abnormal situation we were going through due to the pandemic – and to avoid the large crowds that would for sure visit the area - Porto will soon have the traditional Christmas Tree in front of the City Hall building.

The quintessential symbol of the festive season will be assembled in Praça General Humberto Delgado, at the top of Avenida dos Aliados, and promises to be distinguished by its impressive dimensions: it will be around 34 meters high and 15,5 meters wide, and it cannot be visited inside.

Additionally, the city has already signed a contract with the Porto Traders Association for the implementation of the Christmas lighting in the city, with plans to install Christmas lighting elements in a total of 80 locations. The Christmas lights in the city are scheduled to be switched on for the December 1st holyday.

Among the city’s streets, squares, plazas and gardens, there will be close to 900 ornamental pieces giving a special light and colour to areas with the greatest presence of traditional commerce and points of interest, in a total of 23 areas – including Santa Catarina, Sá da Bandeira, Bolhão or Fernando Tomás among many more.

Due to the importance of Christmas lighting for traditional street commerce in Porto, still recovering from the effects of the pandemic, the autarchy will finance this initiative in the total amount of 550 thousand euros, the same amount that was contracted in 2020. The Porto Traders association, as contract manager, is responsible for monitoring the technical, material and financial execution of the contract.
