Porto was unbroken, unvanquished by the troops of Dom Miguel, and the liberal cause succeeded in the Kingdom of Portugal because of the resistance of the city of Porto and the troops of Dom Pedro. Among those who fought in the Siege of Porto on the Liberal side are Almeida Garrett, Alexandre Herculano and Joaquim António de Aguiar.

Dona Maria II, heir to the throne, later gave the name Invicta (Unvanquished, Unbroken) to the city of Porto; to this day, that title is inscribed in the municipal coat of arms.
