The beautiful city of Porto and the great University of Porto were hosts to the 2019 edition of ICPC World Finals, the algorithmic programming contest for college students.

The most competitive programmers of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) battled for five hours for the title of Programming World Champions, which the Moscow State University won for the second consecutive year, a feat that is a first in this contest.

The Portuguese team, from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, and the best national team in this domain, made it to the finals in Porto and scored 41st place. This is noteworthy as well as it was the first time that a Portuguese team reached the Finals of ICPC.

Through training and competition, teams challenged themselves to score first place. Teams of three, representing their university, worked to solve real-world problems, in a collaborative approach, involving the values of creativity, innovation, and the capability to perform under pressure.

The ICPC Finals gathered over 1500 participants and 135 teams from 47 different countries and this was also possible due to the contributions of over 150 volunteers from all the Faculties of the University of Porto.

This Finals were the concluding moment of a competition that gathered nearly 50 thousand students worldwide, with 5 thousand coaches and representing more than three thousand universities from 111 countries. The contest had regionals in 530 different points of the Globe, where the best competitive programmers from each institution gave their best to move forward in the competition.

The Customs Building in Porto were home to developers and programmers from the USA, China, India, Russia, Brazil, Syria and Egypt, just to mention a few.

The Rector of the University of Porto, António de Sousa Pereira, attended the closing ceremony and highlighted the need to "efficiently promote our competitive strengths, namely the quality of the R&D in UP, the dynamism and entrepreneurship of our ecosystem, opportunities for professional achievement in the city and in the region, the tech-friendly environment, but also the quality of life, the culture, the heritage, the climate and safety."
