'Global Kitchen in Porto' brings together chefs from five continents

From April to November, Porto will host five exclusive gastronomic moments, starring Portuguese Chefs and international culinary renowned names, on a gastronomic journey around the world. 'Global Kitchen in Porto', which will feature talks, showcookings and multi-chef meals, kicks off on the 13th with Vietnamese-Australian Luke Nguyen and Rui Martins as host Chef.

Bringing together 10 Chefs of different nationalities to cook and think about gastronomy in Porto's most emblematic fresh market is the motto of 'Global Kitchen in Porto', an event that will make the city the epicentre of the world gastronomic scene throughout the year. On a journey through the culinary culture of the five continents, with the support of local Chefs, renowned Chefs from around the world will share the cooker, the table and the city, in an exchange of influences, references and knowledge capable of exploring identities, heritages and traditions.

Promoted by the Department for Tourism and Internationalisation, 'Global Kitchen in Porto' aims to enhance the city as a privileged food and wine destination, creating a real exchange of experiences and synergies between chefs, but also with the public, between locals and tourists.

'The Porto City Council aims to promote the city as a hub for international gastronomy and this event is a unique opportunity for us to get to know and get in touch with cuisines from all over the world through the hands of internationally renowned Chefs, in Porto. 'Global Kitchen in Porto' highlights the history and gastronomic tradition of the city which is also a meeting point for different gastronomic cultures', Catarina Santos Cunha, Councillor for Tourism and Internationalisation, explains.

Rui Martins (Culto ao Bacalhau and Cervejarias Brasão), Aurora Goy (Apego), Rita Magro (Blind), Vasco Coelho Santos (Grupo Euskalduna) and Rafaela Louzada (Gruta) will be the five host Chefs who will welcome and cook with names from Vietnam, Spain, Peru, Ghana and Australia, always using the fresh produce available at Mercado do Bolhão, which will host the first event.

All Chefs are some of the most prominent in their countries - some of them have been awarded by the Michelin Guide and other important gastronomic awards, such as the influential '50 Best' list, and have an undeniable international presence.

'Global Kitchen in Porto' will take place on weekends over the months of April, May, July, September and November, when Porto residents and visitors will be invited to participate in talks, showcookings and tastings of exclusive menus, served free of charge and limited to 150 portions.

'When they visit the market, the international Chefs will be able to buy, in Bolhão, the ingredients they intend to use to prepare the dish, the tasting of which will be open to the public, always on Saturdays. Through showcooking or talks, the guest Chefs will have the opportunity to showcase the cuisine of their countries. For each edition there will be a local host Chef whose mission will be to present the city, the people and the national products', Catarina Santos Cunha emphasises.

'Global Kitchen in Porto' opens on 13 April and will feature Luke Nguyen, Chef, author, TV host and teacher. At the age of 23 he opened the most awarded Vietnamese restaurant in the world (RedLantern), and he will be supported by chef Rui Martins, responsible for Culto ao Bacalhau, a restaurant in Mercado do Bolhão.
