Today, 9 May marks Europe Day. This day is celebrated all around Europe.

In Porto, a number of initiatives and activities is being undertaken to celebrate the day French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman delivered the declaration appealing for the construction of Europe, by announcing the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), on May 9, 1950.

Each year since 1986, Europe Day is the occasion for events and celebrations that raise awareness about the EU.

Europe Direct Porto is the European information centre for the northern region of Portugal, in a joint partnership between Porto City Hall and the European Commission. Its mission is to provide citizens in the region with timely and complete information on the European Union.

A set of initiatives are being carried out during the month of May to mark the historic date, namely an exhibition and a quiz about citizenship at the São Bento Metro Station, during the day today, a dialogue with citizens with the support of the Competition Commissioner, 10 May, at 10 am, and also lectures in Porto-Metropolitan Area schools.
