Children and teenagers from the Pediatrics service of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO) of Porto met with the main security forces of Porto (Municipal Police, Sapadores Firefighters Regiment of Porto and Municipal Department of Civil Protection). A set of pedagogical initiatives took place outside the institute, highlighting a cinotechnical exhibition of the Municipal Police, with the “police dogs” in action, and surprise entertainment sessions by… a “Spiderman”.

First, in a timid way, but then, without any kind of constraints, children and teenagers were able to appreciate the mastery of the “police dogs”, of the Cinotechnical Search and Rescue Unit of the Municipal Police, and interact peacefully with them. A moment used for some photographs and smiles of great satisfaction.

The initiative was designed for the children, but was open to all patients who visited the IPO of Porto and also took the opportunity to learn more about the performance of the “police dogs”. "We were able to show our daily lives, as well as the means we use in our police routine", said Commissioner Carina Pires.

“Also for us, it is a different day, as or more important than all our other aspects. We were able to demonstrate that our focus is on proximity to the citizen, being present, showing what we can also do better", she added.

In the interior, in the pediatric consultation room, a "Spiderman" appeared. Another moment of laughter and play, making the children and parents forget, for a moment, why they were there. “Whenever possible, we promote this type of initiative. Moments of relaxation and normalization of a situation that is not normal", assumed the director of the pediatric service of IPO.

“This is a way to collaborate with the community and participate in these activities, important for those who are developing and growing. Thus, we also make known a little of what is happening in the IPO", said Ana Maia Ferreira.
