From January 13th to February 28th, Batalha Centro de Cinema presents a retrospect dedicated to filmmaker Tsai Ming-Liang “Tempo do Desejo”, dedicated to the work of one of the biggest names in contemporary cinema.

Tsai Ming-Liang is the author of a fruitful filmography – which includes the famous “Wayward Cloud” – distinguished, many times at Cannes. Born in Malaysia to a Chinese family, he studied cinema in Taiwan, where he began his career.

Associated with Taiwan New Cinema – a movement led by filmmakers like Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Edward Yang – he stood out from an early stage for his portraits of urban solitude, dyed with erotism and desire, and for the long collaborations he created with a group of actors (who, recurrently, play the same characters).

Lee Kang-Sheng, one of the constant presences in his work, is remarkable for his penetrating and silent performance, in famously minimalist plots, set in desolate city spaces.

In 2013, the filmmaker announced that he would retire from directing narrative films and, since then, has explored the possibilities of exhibition halls in museums and galleries – “Visage” was the first movie to be included in the Louvre collection.

The break in cinema would not last long and, in 2020 Tsai Ming-Liang returned to the big screen with the feature film “Days”.

The retrospect presented at Batalha includes works of fiction for cinema and a set of short and feature films that break down genre barriers.
