University of Porto once again exceeds itself in international ranking by subject

The University of Porto once again exceeds itself in the rankings for the different study areas it offers. In the 2024 edition of the 'QS World University Rankings by Subject', the institution stands out in 28 of the 55 subjects assessed, being the best in Portugal in 16 of them and joining the group of the 200 best universities in the world in 13 study areas, two more than last year.

The Quacquarelli Symonds ranking, which assesses the academic reputation, reputation among employers and scientific output of 1,500 institutions, improves the position of the University of Porto in six areas and distinguishes it for the first time in three other.

A highlight was the debut of the Petroleum Engineering subject, which places U.Porto in the top 100. Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sports and Architecture are also in this top group.

Two other direct entries are Statistics and Operational Research, which is among the 250 best in the world, and English Language and Literature, among the 330 with the best ranking.

The institution's rise in the Quacquarelli Symonds list happens in the subjects of Mechanical Engineering, which is now the 148th best in the world, Modern Languages, Linguistics and Medicine.

According to the ranking, the University of Porto is among the 150 best in Agriculture and Forestry Sciences and Civil Engineering; among the 200 best in Materials Science, Education, Electrical Engineering and Chemical Engineering; among the 240 best in Geophysics; among the 250 best in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Psychology and Chemistry; and among the 300 best in Physics and Astronomy and Math.

Computer Science, Finance, Sociology, Economics and Management place the institution in the group of the 400 best curriculum offers.

Among the 350 in the five major areas of knowledge

In addition to the specific rankings, the QS World University Rankings by Subject analyses institutions in five major areas of knowledge, and U.Porto is among the 350 best in the world in all of them: 176th in Life Sciences and Medicine, 205th in Engineering and Technology, 244th in Natural Sciences, 280th in Arts and Humanities, and 338th in Social Sciences and Management.

When compared to other national institutions, the University of Porto leads in the fields of Architecture, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sports, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Linguistics and Medicine.

Leadership is shared in the areas of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Material Science, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Education, Petroleum Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Psychology.

In the evaluation by major areas of knowledge, Life Sciences and Medicine stand out once again. Worldwide, this list is topped by Harvard University, the leader in four of the areas (Arts and Humanities, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences and also in Social Sciences and Management), and MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology as number one in Engineering and Technology.
