The conclusion of the works regarding the new buildings in the area of the Carvalheiras, in Lapa and in Pereiró enabled the City Hall to increase the supply of social housing in the city. Now, there are 68 new municipal dwellings and the housing process started already.

At the Rua das Carvalheiras, an area in the centre of the city of Porto, still unknown to many, saw the settlement of seven new municipal dwellings, (six T1 – one separate bedroom apartment – and one T3 – three separate bedroom apartment), in a once abandoned plot, nearby the Silo Auto and the Rua de Gonçalo Cristóvão.

All dwellings have already been assigned and the new tenants are settling in. Rui Moreira visited the site yesterday, accompanied by the councillor for Housing and Social Cohesion, Fernando Paulo, as well as the Domus Social managing directors, Filipa Melo and João Sendim, and talked with some of the new residents who invited the Mayor to see the inside of their homes. The investment of this new municipal dwelling endeavour was circa 780 thousand euros.

Still in the centre of the city, the 29 new apartments in Lapa, typologies T0 to T3, also the result of new municipal endeavours, are also ready to accommodate their residents. This public housing stock represents a new concept as regards housing, able to combine energetic efficiency, comfort and modernity, as well as quality of life. It is located nearby the Escola Básica Irene Lisboa and only a few metres away from the metro station. The municipal investment was circa 2.2 million euros. This municipal housing stock features 21 already assigned dwellings, of which one is already home to a family, and the remaining will soon be welcoming their residents.

In the west part of the city, in the Pereiró area, the rehabilitation of the former CTT neighbourhood is also completed. The second block of apartments, of a set of two, was recently rehabilitated to house 32 families. The renovated building, located in the parish of Ramalde, is the result of a project that started in 2017, when the Municipality of Porto met with the residents to present the solutions for this set of housing stock.

Rui Moreira also shared some insights with the current residents, who will soon have new neighbours.

The municipal company Domus Social is about to start the housing process in that building, which among other characteristics has solar photovoltaic panels, new lifts, and a modern image of an endeavour that underwent a profound rehabilitation process of circa 2.8 million euros. The second phase of the total rehabilitation of the neighbourhood of Pereiró provides a total of 60 dwellings (the dwellings of the first block of flats have already welcomed their residents).

The municipality of Porto increases and diversifies its available housing stock, which comprises circa 13 thousand houses that are home to approximately 30 thousand tenants.
