Professor of the UP and researcher at INESC-TEC was named Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Fellow

João Gama, a full professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto and researcher at INESC TEC, was recently named fellow of IEEE – Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a professional association for electronic engineering and electrical engineering, with its corporate office in New York City. João Gama was named for “his contributions regarding knowledge extraction techniques from continuous data flows”.

Award for Excellence by the University of Porto open applications

The University of Porto awards in-house researchers. The application period concludes on 31st January. The winners of the scientific research award will be announced in March 2021 and, pandemic constraints permitting, the awardees will be presented with an in-person prize ceremony.

Everyone can visit amazing spaces within the University of Porto, either in person or from one’s home; the building of the Rectory, the Porto Botanical Garden and the Casa-Museu Abel Salazar are now included in the UP’s virtual mapping project. This is an even more worthwhile project amid the ongoing pandemic, when the set of 3D tours by the U.Porto is available and invites everyone to enter spaces that aren’t normally visited by the community.

The U.Porto (CDUP-UP) launches the initiative “Experiências Outdoor" this December, with sports activities such as Skate, Golf and Tennis. All sessions are held outdoors, in compliance with ongoing safety measures. Applications are open.

See the Sea Monsters running loose at the Rectory of the University of Porto

The Rectory building of the University of Porto hosts an incredible exhibition made of waste collected in the beaches of the Invicta. Sea Monsters ("Monstros Marinhos”) is the theme of the exhibit jointly organized by the Interdisciplinary Center of Maritime and Environmental Investigation (CIIMAR) and the campaign Ocean Action Hub.

The studio SUMMARY, led by architect Samuel Gonçalves, alumnus of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), won the prestigious dezeen Awards 2020 in the category “Emerging Architect of the Year”.

Owing to the pandemic, the summit, exclusively organised by the Federação Académica do Porto - FAP, takes to a virtual platform. The event is free and it is held on 25th, 26th and 27th November.

The University of Porto dressed up to welcome the new students

The building of the Rectory of the University of Porto dressed up to welcome the new students for the academic year 2020/2021. As tradition, newcomers are gifted a welcoming Kit, which takes place in an especially arranged space, following all the health measures, from 12 to 23 October. The kit includes a t-shirt, a tote bag, a cape and a bracelet that ensures privileged access to museums and venues in the city of Porto, and also a week free of the UPFit programme.
