The Mayor of Porto visited Japan, on the occasion of the celebrations of the 480 years of friendship between Japan and Portugal and the 45 years of the twinning of Porto with Nagasaki. In Tokyo, Rui Moreira was able to verify all the dynamics in the Portuguese embassy, namely in the services provided by our diplomacy in the country of the rising sun.

Rui Moreira was received by Portugal's ambassador to Japan, Vitor Sereno, having the opportunity to see the improvements introduced by the diplomat in the new chancellery. The new facilities opened on January 1 this year, fulfilling "a dream of several decades for our country and our community to have a building worthy of the centuries-old relationship between Portugal and Japan", writes Vitor Sereno, on the official website of the Portuguese embassy in Japan.

The Mayor of Porto, accompanied by his chief of staff, Vasco Ribeiro, visited the new space, modern and functional, which provides all necessary services in an integrated manner to all users. "The new embassy will be a showcase for our modern and competitive Portugal (#portugalmodernoecompetitivo)", adds the diplomat, in the same message.

Vitor Sereno has been the Ambassador of Portugal to Japan since March 8, 2022. He previously served as Ambassador to Senegal and non-resident in Côte d 'Ivoire, Guinea-Conakry, The Gambia, Burkina Faso, Liberia and Sierra Leone between September 2018 and January 2022. In 2020 he received the award from the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIP) for economic diplomat of the year.

In the evening, at the official residence, the ambassador and ambassadress, Andrea Direito, offered a dinner to Rui Moreira and his chief of staff, which was also attended by other diplomatic officials and representatives of the AICEP Portugal Global - Trade & Investment Agency, in addition to the deputy head of mission and in charge of the consular section, Tiago de Brito Penedo, the representative of the Portuguese-Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Paulo Ramos, and the Tourism Attaché, Inês Queiroz.

Vitor Sereno and Rui Moreira addressed several issues of interest in Portugal's relations with Japan, with special emphasis on our country's participation in the World Expo 2025, which will take place in Osaka, which hosts this global initiative for the second time. The author of the Municipal Slaughterhouse project, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, is in the running for the construction of the Portuguese pavilion.

Osaka was already the stage of the World Expo in 1970, under the theme "Progress and Harmony for Humanity". This time, it is presented to the world with the theme "Conceiving the society of the future, imagining our life tomorrow", between March and November 2025.
