U.Porto ranks among the 100 best Universities in the world in five scientific areas

The University of Porto (U.Porto) is among the 100 best universities in the world in five research areas, with regards to scientific production, namely Civil Engineering, Agrarian Sciences, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, according to the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities 2017, from the National Taiwan University.

The calculation of the ranking list is based on the scientific performance of the top universities in the world in 2017 and in the past 11 years and it needs to meet three criteria: productivity, impact and excellence in scientific research.

On the basis of this data, 14 scientific disciplines are analysed per institution.

The University of Porto is among the world's 300 best in 13 of the 14 scientific assessed areas, standing out specifically in five areas, such as Civil Engineering, Agrarian Sciences, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, placing U.Porto in the Top 100 in the world in this ranking.

Thus, U.Porto is 53rd Best University in the World, 10th Best in Europe in Civil Engineering, the 57th World best and 17th Europe Best regarding Agrarian Sciences, the 58th World Best and 20th Europe Best in Pharmacology and Toxicology, the 73rd World Best and 21st Europe Best in Mechanical Engineering and 82nd World Best and 17th Europe Best in Chemical Engineering.

In terms of institution overall assessment, The University of Porto ranks 6th best in the Ibero-American space, the 93rd Europe Best and the 232nd World Best, which represents a rise of 22 places from 2016.

This year's ranking position confirms the growing trend since the ranking's first edition.

Within just 10 years, the University of Porto moved up 227 places in the world ranking, from 459th in 2007 to 232nd in 2017.
