The Municipal Tourist Tax, which Porto shall apply from March 2018, and that was approved by the City Council this week, shall not be used for investment in tourism. This commitment was reaffirmed by Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto, on 20 December, at a press conference at Porto City Hall.

For avoidance of doubt, Mayor Rui Moreira reiterated the intentions of this new rate: to increase revenue "to meet tourist footprint reduction".

"It is found that there is a tourist footprint on dwelling, city cleaning and mobility. Therefore, we shall use this tax to mitigate the impact tourism has on citizen's lives", explained Rui Moreira.
