Saturday July 1st, the XII Cultural programming of Porto Cemeteries, an initiative by Porto City Hall, scheduled a guided tour to the British Cemetery in Porto. The tour starts at 3.30 pm.

The cemetery, originally referred to as The Burial Ground, goes back as 1787. The land was bought by the members of The British Factory - the merchants and factors- under the leadership of the British consul of that time, John Whitehead.

Porto (St.James) British Churchyard is located next to St. James Church, near the Júlio Dinis maternity hospital and the Cristal Palace Gardens.

It was the first permanent burial ground outside Porto's walls, far from houses and churches. Conversely, only in the 1820s this cemetery received the first monuments and for that matter it is rather different from all the others in Porto.

Porto municipal cemeteries are part of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe, since 2005 and are founding members of the European route of cemeteries since 2010.

Participation is free but prior registration is necessary, via parquesurbanos@cm-porto.pt or phone number 22 532 00 80.

All visits provide Portuguese sign-language translation if so requested at the time of registration, with a minimum 2 business day prior notice.
