The Water Pavilion raises awareness on the natural environment by organising a clean-up of the Tinto River, a tributary of the Douro River. The initiative is held on 28 May, at 10.30 am and it is open to everyone who wishes to take part. The river watchmen of Águas e Energia do Porto will also participate in the event. Previous registration is mandatory.

This activity is part of the Valorisation and Rehabilitation Plan of the waterlines of the Águas do Município do Porto (PVRLA), which is held under the Bandeira Azul 2021 programme, with the umbrella motto “Transformed waste, Protected Ecosystems”.

This plan is included in the Municipal Strategy to Climate Change Adaptation (EMAAC), whose main goals are to care for and protect the water resources of the city, thus reducing its vulnerability regarding the impact of climate change via the prioritizing of compliance actions and suitable investment.

The project is promoted by the municipal company Águas e Energia do Porto, with the strategic partnership of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, the Portuguese Agency of Environment, and the Municipality of Porto.

Circa 85% of the funding of the Valorisation and Rehabilitation Plan of the waterlines of the Águas do Município do Porto (PVRLA) is met by the Programme “Environment, Climate Change and Low carbon Economy”, with three areas of intervention: Circular Economy, Decarbonisation of Society and Valorisation of the territory. This programme is held in the framework of the EEA Grants 2014-2021, in a total investment of 235.288,03 euros.

Via the EEA Grants, donor countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) help the city mitigate climate change impact and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. For the 2014-2021 period, there is a total contribution of 2.8 billion euros, for 15 beneficiary states. In Portugal, the implementation of the EEA Grants is monitored by the National Management Unity (UNG), which is the focal point for this programme.

Those who wish to take part in the clean-up of the Tinto River must register until 27 May, by filling in a form. The meeting point will be next the bridge over the Tinto River. It is advised that participants wear comfortable shoes, clothes and a hat.
