The global winners of the Best of Wine Tourism awards were announced in Argentina

After the regional winners, the global winners of the Best of Wine Tourism 2023 awards are now known. The wine society Quanta Terra, in Favaios, was distinguished in the Douro and Porto and Vinhos Verdes region.

The announcement of the winners was made at the closing of the annual conference of the Great Wine Capitals network, on Thursday night, in Mendoza, Argentina. Porto is one of the founding members of this partnership, in which it represents the regions of Douro and Porto Wines and Vinhos Verdes. The councillor for Tourism and Internationalization, Catarina Santos Cunha, and the municipal director of Tourism and Internationalization, Fátima Santos, represented Porto City Hall.

This year, 545 applications were registered for the Best of Wine Tourism awards, with a global distinction awarded by each of the network’s members cities:

“Quanta Terra Douro offers a unique experience, in which contemporary art, the rural world, gastronomy and wine culture coexist”, highlighted the organization of the Best of Wine Tourism awards. “Working as a winery, lab, wine tourism centre and cultural space, Quanta Terra Douro offers the visitors the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities”, added.

The Great Wine Capitals Global Network, founded in 1999, is an international cooperation network of cities linked to wine regions of great prestige and international recognition. The network has been expanding with the integration of new members, and currently comprises 11 cities and around 44 wine regions: Adelaide (South Australia), Bilbao-Rioja (Spain), Bordeaux (France), Cape Town-Cape Winelands (South Africa), Lausanne (Switzerland), Mainz-Rheinhessen (Germany), Mendoza (Argentina), Porto (Portugal), San Francisco-Napa Valley (United States), Valparaíso-Casablanca Valley (Chile), Verona (Italy). This network develops a set of initiatives that aim to promote the development and prosperity of the wine industry, communities, and tourism in each one of the cities / regions that make up the network, through exchange and joint projects.

They promote excellence in wine tourism, promoting the sharing of knowledge and experiences, boosting business, and acting as a vehicle for collaboration on challenges and opportunities within the international alliance of these wine regions.

One of the main activities of the network, performed since 2003, is the annual Best of Wine Tourism competition which rewards companies providing wine tourism services for the excellence of their facilities and services, in categories such: accommodation, wine restaurants, architecture and landscape, art and culture, innovative wine tourism experiences, wine tourism services, and sustainable wine tourism practices.
