The "Queima das Fitas", scheduled to take place between 3rd and 10th May, has been cancelled by the Academic Federation of Porto - FAP. This is for the greater good of public health and to fight the new coronavirus. The "Queima das Fitas" is back in 2021.

The "Queima das Fitas", or Ribbon Burning week in Porto, is a traditional festivity of the students of Portuguese universities. Celebrations extend for one week and there are Tunas that perform in town, among other festivities.

This decision by FAP, chaired by Marcos Alves Teixeira, announced on 17th March, "was reasoned and taken after all alternatives had been exhausted, with the support of all the student's associations".

In the statement by FAP, all students expressed sadness for this situation, but most importantly the Academia of Porto is aware that this is the right decision to be made.

Following Porto example of urging citizens to say home, also FAP has made a video #O Nosso Porto de encontro é #ficaremcasa, to enhance this message within the academic population.
