British Astronomer Royal, sir Martin Rees will be in Porto, this week, to talk about the opportunities and threats in the field of science in the 21st century.

Regarded as one of the world's greatest scientific minds of our times, Martin Rees delivers a lecture at the Biodiversity Gallery in the University of Porto, 17 November, starting at 6 pm.

The astrophysicist, cosmologist and astronomer will encourage us to reflect with regard to the increasing demands in an attempt to provide clear answers to such questions as what role will science play in the future? What are the main advantages and perils facing science? What are the right political choices? What are the appropriate relationships between science and society? Are citizens able to understand science? And will scientists be able to explain the pros and cons of science?

Author of the book "From here to Infinity: A Vision for the Future of Science", Sir Martin Rees contravenes the principle of science as a grey area inaccessible to the general public.

To fight these dominant ideas, Sir Martin Rees, advocates a better communication between researchers and lay people.

This event is organised by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation.

Sir Martin studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and undertook post-graduate research at Cambridge, where he completed his PhD. He was President of the Royal Society of London between 2005 and 2010.
