The initiative “Sábados a Contar” means a July bright beginning as far as kids educational and fun activities are concerned. Reading sessions are aimed at children aged 3 and 6 and take place at the Sala de Leitura Infantojuvenil, aka Youth Literature Reading Room at the BMAG, for the “Hora do Conto”, till the end of the month.

A caterpillar, a chicken, a seahorse and a monkey entre the Municipal Library Almeida Garrett on Saturday mornings and afternoons to delight children (and adults alike). All “Sábados a Contar” sessions are free, but require previous application.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969, by Eric Carle is the first story to be told. This classic picture book was welcomed by parents and thrilled many children. It was translated into 70 languages and sold over 50 million copies.

The following weekend offers “Galinha Ruiva”, by António Torrado, on the adventures of baking an autumn cake. On 17 July, another story by Eric Carle, “Mr. Seahorse”: “When Mrs. Seahorse lays her eggs, she does it on Mr. Seahorse's belly!” What a devoted father!

The last weekend of the “Sábados a Contar” initiative features “O Macado de Rabo Cortado”, by António Torrado.

The sessions kick off at 11 am and repeat at 3.30 pm at the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library. The storytelling concludes with a workshop. Participation is mandatory for those who wish to participate. See here.
