The once service building in the complex of the Faculty of Pharmacy is now to be transformed into a student residence by the University of Porto. The public tender was launched on 11th March and the budget is circa 1.45 million euros.

We are looking at one thousand square metres, in the Viela da Carvalhosa, which dates back to 1979 that should provide residence to “graduate, masters or integrated masters’ students, who are not able to reside within their households and need accommodation to pursue studies”, as announced by the U. Porto.

The project is concluded and was designed by the studio from Porto, Barata Arquitetos. The sketches display 27 double bedrooms with bathroom, including three bathrooms for persons with reduced mobility, throughout three floors.

Ground floor and basement are to integrate a multipurpose room, a canteen, a reading room, administrative offices, laundry and other equipment, as announced by the University of Porto, which furthers that the endeavour should be concluded within 300 days.

The transformation of such building into a student’s campus housing had been announced in 2019, on the occasion of the 108th anniversary of the University of Porto, when the University Rector, António de Sousa Pereira, explained this investment as the answer to the “complex housing problem within the student community”.

Currently, the Social Action Services of the U.Porto provide nine university residencies, scattered by the three university poles, with a capacity to lodge circa 1.200 students.
